THE 11TH ANNUAL TURKEY DAY
The staff of Juniper Hill Golf Course would like to whole-heartedly thank all of you who participated in our Turkey Day Event.
It was the best Turkey Day.
Because of your generosity, 325 turkeys were donated to the Worcester County Food Bank, Massachusetts Veterans, Inc. and 60 turkeys to the Northborough Food Pantry, to feed needy families in Central Massachusetts.
Due to your overwhelming support, over $1700 was also donated to the Worcester County Food Bank from the Hole-In-One Challenge, and Turkey Day donations, and $490 to the Northborough Food Pantry from the Breakfast Buffet and the Afternoon Snack Buffet.

RUSTY - JUNIPER HILL'S BEST FRIEND
by: Margaret Peddle
This 40 pound, black & white energetic dog, who responds to specific commands by his handler, is the reason Juniper’s Canada geese population stands at zero – last count.
Rusty is a border collie born, bred & trained on 600 acres of bucolic countryside called Big Bend Farm located in northern Virginia. Big Bend is also the home to Barbara Ray, one of the most respected and experienced sheepdog handlers in the U.S., and the pioneer of training border collies for wildlife mitigation.
Border collies are a highly intelligent canine breed possessing natural herding instincts; their intense gaze (known as the eye), becomes a threat to geese, which view the dog as intimidating and frightening. Rusty was trained to chase (but not harm) geese, which also includes pursuit in water. Ponds and rivers where geese feel most protected are not a safe haven as the dog’s constant harassment techniques insure that they will fly away.
Border collies are the only known successful and effective means in resolving the Canada geese population on open space properties.
Over the past three months, Rusty has become well known to many of our golfers and he has become a hero to our maintenance workers. He loves to ride in (his) golf cart and can be seen each day – morning & afternoon, Riverside or Lakeside, with his faithful handler, Dave, on their goose patrol.
For all of you Juniper Hill golfers, we thank you for your patience in enduring the nuisance and inconvenience of having to deal with the geese problem. It should be a pleasure now for you to enjoy our wonderful courses, being able to putt on our greens, walk on our fairways, and even brush your golf shoes – all free from goose “poop”.
In October, Rusty will be going back to Virginia and Big Bend Farm where he will stay for the winter months returning again in the spring. We’re going to miss watching this remarkable dog as he streaks down the fairways or leaps into the ponds entirely focused on the job at hand.
As one golfer so aptly remarked, “Rusty, you’re such a good dog for getting rid of all those geese, let me shake your paw!” – Our sentiment too.
