Golf Tip of the MONTH

DISTANCE CONTROL FROM THE SAND

The three variables that control how far a ball will fly out of the sand are the amount of sand you hit prior to hitting the ball, club face loft, and speed of the swing. Golfers who have a hard time with partial shots or less than full swings would be better off using their most lofted wedge and taking slightly more sand on shorter bunker shots rather than trying to adjust the speed of the swing. The ball will come out slower and higher without much spin. The opposite would be true for longer greenside bunker shots. Try slightly opening the face of your nine iron or pitching wedge and take a shallow layer of sand behind the ball. The shot should fly longer, lower, and again with some roll.
Of course like everything else in golf, you have to experiment with what works best for you.
